Yellow Leaf Festival & Audubon Fall Festival Collaborate by the Communications Committee |
If you watched television this weekend, it's your own fault! No matter the age, you could have been out enjoying the Yellow Leaf Festival or the Audubon Fall Festival and heard live music, watched sky divers, mingled with artists and "carnies", viewed antique cars or "walked" in a cake walk. ( For those who didn't get a piece of Betty Ruth Rinaudo's carrot cake from the cake walk, we can only say, come next year!) The only complaint that I heard was that the town was busy. The merchants had good traffic and none of them were where the complaints were made. Naturally, our friends at Angola made their presence felt with the last Rodeo of the fall. Those that didn't have tickets, had something else to do! |

Greetings! 10/15/07
Many thanks to everyone who attended the Candidates' Forum #2 and the "Chamber After Hours" at the Bank of St. Francisville last week. A special thanks goes out to the First Baptist Church for hosting the Candidates' Forum. Mike Smith, our Government Relations Committee Chair, provides an update on this event in his article later in the Newsletter.
The "Chamber After Hours" event also had a great turnout and was enjoyed by all. A quick word of thanks to everyone involved for a great time and to Carter Leake for his brief overview of the Bank of St. Francisville's remodeling project. The Bank's "new look," while forward-thinking in its use of spatial planning, interior structure and design, nevertheless stays completely in keeping with the centuries' old architectural beauty unique to our downtown's historic district.

Forum A HUGE Success
Governmental Relations Committee
by Chairman Mike Smith
The Chamber hosted the second in a series of Police Jury Candidate Forums on Monday, October 8, at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Over 125 people - including 12 candidates - attended the forum. Candidates answered questions on everything from the parish budget, to roads, to growth.
We thank First Baptist Church for allowing the community to use its first-class facilities. We also thank Bill Depew of Rural Broadcast Service for filming the forum and making footage available for you to view - free of charge - via the Internet if you were not able to join us in person.
Don't forget to vote on Saturday! Also, visit the Candidate Section of our Chamber's website to read the responses to our questionnaire as you make an informed decision.
Hwy 61 Work to begin
Governmental Relations Committee
by Chairman Mike Smith
After receiving requests from members, your Chamber Governmental Relations Committee contacted State Rep. Tom McVea for an update on Highway 61 road construction.
At present, utility relocation is nearly complete - 95% or better for telephone, natural gas, electricity and water.
DOTD has informed the Chamber that it expects to let a contract for construction in January for the section of highway from St. Francisville to Bains. It then expects to let a separate contract in February for the section from Thompson's Creek to St. Francisville.
Work is expected to begin shortly after the contracts are finalized and take between 2 to 4 years to complete depending mostly on, yes, the weather. The final price tag could approach $80 million.
Several Chamber members with businesses along Hwy. 61 have expressed an interest in securing a contact numbers to the contractors in case questions or concerns arise during the construction process. DOTD will make this contact information available to the Chamber once contractors are selected. We will pass it along to you through this newsletter.
Your Chamber has also learned that significant intersection improvements at Highways 10 and 61 are not planned as a part of the overall Highway 61 widening project. Currently, Highway 10 has no left turn lanes or turning arrows when approaching Highway 61 from either the east or west. This intersection has been the site of several major accidents this year alone. Your Chamber has requested a traffic count study for this intersection and is considering actions that it can take to encourage DOTD to reconsider this decision.
The DOTD website is a great way to keep up with the progress of this road project - and others slated in our area.
