Birds, Botany, and Butterflies Nature Walk

Hosted by The Feliciana Nature Society
The Feliciana Nature Society will host a nature walk, "Birds, Botany, and Butterflies at The Bluffs," on Saturday, September 15, from 9:30 to 11:30 am. Participants will meet at The Cottage (the former Bluff's country club) on Sunrise Way for a guided walk along the three mile nature trail at The Bluffs Country Club and Resort, located off of Louisiana Hwy. 965 in West Feliciana Parish. Admission is free. Participants are advised to bring bottled water, binoculars, and insect repellant. Light refreshments will be provided at the end of the walk. No pets please.

The walk will be one of light to moderate difficulty along the paved three mile nature trail. Portions of the trail are hilly, with two somewhat steep changes in elevation. The trail covers a variety of habitats, including bottomland swamps, upland hardwoods, and a semi-arid cactus area.

Town Wins Top Water Award

States The Advocate - James Minton
St. Francisville picked up an award from the Louisiana Rural Water Association during a banquet last week in Alexandria: Water System of the Year for south Louisiana.

St. Francisville was chosen for the town's dedication to providing safe drinking water, the association said in a news release

Mayor Billy D'Aquilla said the award stems from the hard work of town employees who keep the water flowing.

Word From Hamilton Willis

Greetings!
The time has come for me to step down as President of the Chamber and put energy into the next thing. That next thing is the Police Jury race for the seat that Mr. Babers is vacating, at the end of this year. The importance of having good men and women that represent the values of this Parish and have a vision for the future that preserves our traditions, prompts me to enter this race.
The attention drawn from the duties of this office concerns me and I don't want to "under serve" the office. Nor do I want to give cause to those that might also run for the seat to accuse me of an unfair advantage. It has been a pleasure to serve with such an active Board! Their accomplishments speak for themselves! It has been my pleasure to serve them and this community. I leave matters in the able hands of our President Elect, Miles Higgins. He has served on the Executive Committee and has been and integral part of all matters, this year. His 'fingerprints' are all over the accomplishments of this year.
In addition to thanking Mr. Babers for many years of service to the Jury, we need to thank another servant who is stepping down sooner. Justice of the Peace, Kevin Dreher, is stepping down after a long run in that office. Both of these two public servants have given of their time and talents for this community. Thank you!
Don't forget that we have the LSU Mobile Classroom coming to St. Francisville. See the details below, but this is your chance to get informed, trained and challenged on some very interesting topics. This is a good chance to educate your employees on customer relations. Look over the list and see what might interest you!
Sincerely, Hamilton

Feliciana Nature Society Announces...

Annual Hummingbird Celebration
The Feliciana Hummingbird Celebration promotes the unique breeding habitat found in the St. Francisville area. The Rogillio property on Tunica Trace is the subject of a research project, now in its sixth year, which focuses on the breeding ruby throat hummingbird population in the area.

The Feliciana Hummingbird Celebration will begin with a reception on Friday evening, July 27, at Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site, 12501Hwy.10, St. Francisville. Beginning at 6 p.m., visitors can enjoy wine and cheese while strolling the gardens of Rosedown. At 6:45 p.m., speakers David and Tracey Banowetz will present a program on gardening with native plants to attract birds and wildlife. The presentation is based on their experiences in landscaping their former home in suburban Baton Rouge. Admission is $10.

The festival will continue on Saturday, July 28. From 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., hummingbird biologists Linda Beall and Nancy Newfield will capture and band birds at two private gardens in the St. Francisville area. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe hummingbirds up close as they are weighed and measured. In addition, vendors will be at both homes with hummingbird plants, birding equipment, books, and crafts available for sale. Experts will be on hand to share advice about gardening, binoculars, and more. The gardens include the home of Carlisle Rogillio at 15736 Tunica Trace (Hwy. 66) and Murrell Butler at 9485 Oak Hill Road. In addition, the gardens of Hollywood Plantation, the home of Glenn and Eleanor Thomas, 9441 Sligo Road, will be open from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m., offering hummingbird observation and light refreshments. Words from Hamilton Willis

Greetings!
The Tembec Job Fair, held last Friday, was a great success! Somewhere above two out of three employees came through and met where almost 40 employers were prepared to present offerings of both in-state and out. Fortune 500 and governmental offerings, beside other local industries, both private and publicly traded, were represented.
Tembec and the St. Francisville Chamber partnered with the State to help present this job fair. People were generally optimistic and some went away with interivew times; all went away with prospects! Special thanks to the Best Western staff for helping this along!
The Special Meeting of the Police Jury should soon prove fruitful! Good participation from all helped assure that as we plan for our future, the many stakeholders can operate with ownership in the process. It is critical that all participate, so that we get the results that represent our many view points. Though these may conflict in places, the old adage that "involvement in the planning, breeds commitment to the cause," will allow us to know that even if a decision didn't go "our way," we can still own the process. Thanks to the Growth Managment group and the Jury and all who participated!
For those who made both the Special Meeting and the previously scheduled Chamber After Hours, you got a double treat! Good music, beautiful setting, good company and superb food made this a "Treat of the Summer," event. With ingredients like these, you can imagine that the result was outstanding. Thank you Myrtles Plantation and Varnedoe's Carriage House Restaurant!
As we celebrate the Fourth of July with family and friends, remember to thank all that uphold our liberties. Beside the men and women in uniform serving in the military, our police and court officers maintain these liberties. Our schools and teachers help to educate our youth, so that they can inform themselves and keep our government in check. Our firemen and hospital workers keep us safe and aid us when we aren't. In our community our public servants maintain the order and services that are important to make the life and liberty that we have and hold more enjoyable! Remember to thank all of these, when you celebrate our freedom this week!
